Romeo and Juliet

It was Christmas Eve, and Adam still hadn’t been invited for dinner. Taking a chance she had no plans, he arrived at the Leivas at nine that morning. It seemed like the house had changed overnight. Garland made from pineapple leaves hung above the front door while tiny white lights twisted loosely around the porch rails. So understated, Adam thought. Yet, it made all the difference to him, and put him in the holiday spirit. Adam thought about his mom and the trucks that would pull in every November, filled with Christmas decorations to dress up their home. For many years, he’d never understood why all that production had to happen, only to be taken down immediately after the new year. But as time went on, he’d realized his mother had simply been trying to fit in with the rest of the neighbors. She hadn’t come from money. She’d been born on the mainland and was his dad’s office assistant. They’d always felt a little removed from society, which made Adam hurt for his mom. It was the life they had chosen, and it was a good one. Plus, it had given her the son she adored. She told him constantly that she’d do it all again.

His attention shifted to the pretty girl who answered the door. Maele wore shorts and a T-shirt, her long brown hair tied up in a ponytail. He was drawn to her face. Her velvety brown eyes were expressive and deep. But it was her dimples that got his attention, especially when she smiled. He realized he might have been staring a little intently when she self-consciously turned to look at the door.

“Hey,” she said, smiling and stepping outside.

“Hey, Maele. I thought I’d come by to see what you’re doing today.”

“Nothing much,” she said, a sly smile crossing her face. “Except I finally got in the water on a board yesterday.” She dipped her chin down and fidgeted with her pockets.

“I know,” Adam said. “I saw.”

“You drove all the way to Kalihiwai? Why didn’t you say hi?”

“You were with your friends, so I didn’t want to bother you.” Also, he could hardly move after the yoga class, but he wasn’t about to admit it. “I saw you on the water, but …”

She forced a laugh. “Yeah, I was crying. I was a mess.”

“Right, yeah. It felt like you needed your space. Are you okay?”

She led him down the driveway. “Yes, I’m okay. I just have to keep trying.”

“Well, I’m glad you got to spend time with your friends,” he replied.

She had danced away from him, and he followed right behind.

She spun around to face him, her hair whipping in the wind. “Anyway, I’m glad you’re here today.”

She kept dancing away from him.

“You are?” He tried to keep up.

“Yeah,” she said, doing the twirling thing again.

“I was going to see if you wanted to go hiking.

"But we have to be back for dinner.”

He still wasn’t sure whether he was included in that plan. Nevertheless, he was game either way.
